The verb avoir is one of the most essential irregular verbs in French. It has three main uses:
Examples: J'ai un vélo. (I have a bike.) / Tu as une maison ? (Do you have a house?) / Nous avons des livres. (We have books.)
Explanation: Use avoir to express ownership of objects, just like "have" in English.
Examples: J'ai 35 ans. (I am 35 years old.) / Elle a 20 ans. (She is 20 years old.) / Ils ont 50 ans. (They are 50 years old.)
Explanation: In French, you don't say "I am old"—you say "I have X years." This is a key difference from English!
Examples: J'ai faim. (I'm hungry = I have hunger.) / Tu as froid ? (Are you cold = Do you have cold?) / On a peur. (We're afraid = We have fear.)
Explanation: French uses avoir + noun for many states where English uses "to be" + adjective. This is expressed through idiomatic expressions (see Section 3).
Examples: J'ai mangé. (I have eaten.) / Tu as parlé. (You have spoken.) / Ils ont joué. (They have played.)
